INTER HOUSE KAPAHAKA COMPS 2008

On Saturday the 19th of April 2008, the annual Hato Paora Gala and House Comps were held at the college. Despite a downpour of rain at midday the crowds that turned up to support the kura were awesome. Whanau whanui from all over the country provided the usual food and used goods stalls. The hangi was so exquisite that I am still eating left overs two days after the event!

At 2pm everyone was seated in the school gym to await the main event - the Inter-House Kapahaka Competition. With M.C. extraordinaire Atawhai Tibble the concert commenced with Te Whare o Ngati Tawhirimatea. Rana Tawhitapou once again led his ropu with pride. The were followed by Te Whare o Ngati Tangaroa who were guided by Tamati Wiari.

The dance acts were continued on from last year but this time house combined to make new groups. The first of these was 'TAWHIRO'. Adding humour and some drama these dances prove to be another outlet for our boys to express themselves, sometimes even more so than the kapahaka I think!

The third house to stand were reigning champions Ngati Rongomatane. They once again gave a very tight and well choreographed performance and were commanded by Head boy Ross Holt. Despite having a sore voicebox Leroy King made the crowd ooh and aah with his solo performances for his whare, Ngati Whiro. They concluded the competition well with lots of passion and committment shown through out their bracket.

The combo RONGOROA followed with their blend of hip hop, pop, old school and house music.

3 seniors were also priveledged to be badged as Kaiarahi also that day. Te Meera Ketu, Hiwaru Paku and Rongo Jensen. Congratulations boys.

All in all it was another successful house comps and I hope the Whanau Whanui all enjoyed it. Thanks to everyone that attended especially those who supported with putea as we raised well over $13,000.
